Early Life and Education
Eastman was born into a poor family of seven children. His father, George Washington Eastman, was a farmer and merchant, while his mother, Maria Kilbourn Eastman, was a devout Christian. At a young age, Eastman showed an interest in photography, and he often spent his free time developing and printing his own photographs.
Eastman attended Rochester Free Academy and graduated in 1874. He then went to work as a bank clerk, but he soon realized that his true passion was photography.
The Invention of the Kodak Camera
In 1878, Eastman developed a dry plate process that replaced the wet plate process that had been used in photography for over 30 years. The dry plate process was much more convenient and portable, making it ideal for amateur photographers.
In 1888, Eastman introduced the Kodak camera, which made photography even more accessible to the general public. The Kodak camera was a small, handheld camera that used a roll of film to capture images. It was easy to use, and it produced relatively high-quality images.
The Eastman Kodak Company
In 1892, Eastman founded the Eastman Kodak Company, which quickly became a major manufacturer of photographic equipment and supplies. Eastman Kodak became one of the largest companies in the world, and it played a major role in the development of photography throughout the 20th century.
Later Life and Legacy
Eastman retired from Eastman Kodak in 1925, and he spent his remaining years traveling and pursuing his other interests. He was a generous philanthropist, and he donated millions of dollars to hospitals, schools, and other charitable organizations.
Eastman died in Rochester, New York, on March 14, 1932. He is remembered as one of the most important inventors in the history of photography, and his legacy continues to inspire photographers today.
